
AI is moving fast. Whether you’re building it, buying it, or simply using tools that rely on it, artificial intelligence is now embedded in how many organisations operate. But with that speed comes a big question: how do we stay in control?
That’s where ISO/IEC 42001 comes in: the world’s first international standard for AI Management Systems (AIMS). It’s a practical framework for making sure the AI you develop, deploy, or depend on is responsible, transparent, and trustworthy.
So, what is an AI Management System (AIMS)?
Very similar to an Information Security Management System (ISMS) under ISO 27001, it’s a set of policies, objectives, and processes that help you manage the risks, responsibilities, and impacts of AI, not just for your organisation, but for your users, society, and the environment.
In plain English? It’s a structured way to make sure your AI isn’t doing things it shouldn’t, and that your organisation has accountability, oversight, and controls in place to back that up.
ISO 42001 helps organisations:
- Define what “responsible AI” means in their context
- Identify and manage risks
- Align AI practices with existing security frameworks
- Document all of this in a way that can be audited and improved over time
Why does this matter now?
There are a few reasons ISO 42001 is quickly becoming important, and why now is the right time to start paying attention.
Most notably, the EU AI Act has started to come into effect as of February 2025, with stricter requirements for high-risk AI systems kicking in by August 2026. This is the first major law regulating AI across Europe, and it introduces a risk-based model: banning certain high-risk applications (like social scoring), requiring transparency for others (like chatbots or content generators), and applying strict compliance measures to systems that could significantly impact rights or safety, such as AI used in recruitment, credit scoring, or healthcare.
Crucially, the Act recognises that innovation needs space. Startups and smaller businesses will benefit from scaled-back requirements and regulatory sandboxes, giving them room to test and develop ideas safely before full compliance kicks in.
At the same time, boards, customers, and regulators are raising their expectations. It’s no longer enough to say your AI is ethical, you need to be able to prove it. Trust is fast becoming a differentiator in the market, and ISO 42001 gives organisations a structured, auditable way to demonstrate responsible AI governance.
One of ISO 42001’s biggest strengths is how well it integrates with existing management systems. If you already follow frameworks like ISO 27001 (Information Security), ISO 9001 (Quality) or ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), you’re not starting from scratch. The standard builds on what you’re already doing, extending familiar practices like risk assessment, accountability, and documentation into the AI space.
Who should be paying attention?
This isn’t just a standard for tech giants or AI labs. If you’re in a sector where AI could influence safety, decision-making, or individual rights (think healthcare, transport, finance, recruitment, or energy) ISO 42001 is directly relevant.
But even beyond regulated industries, any organisation that develops, integrates, or relies on AI should be paying attention. That includes startups building AI-powered tools, developers embedding third-party models into products, and teams responsible for procurement, compliance, or legal oversight.
In other words: if AI touches your business, so should governance.
What can you do now?
Even if regulation doesn’t fully apply to you yet, expectations around responsible AI are rising fast. Getting ahead of that curve doesn’t need to be complicated.
Start by mapping out where AI is used in your organisation, not just the systems you build, but also third-party tools you depend on. From there, assess what risks those systems pose to users, society, or your business.
Look beyond the tech. ISO 42001 encourages organisations to consider the broader impact of AI, including social, ethical, and environmental implications. Because responsible AI isn’t just about performance or accuracy, it’s about accountability, fairness, and long-term trust.
